Wilmington sits where the Cape Fear River meets the Atlantic, and the military thread runs straight through it. The USS North Carolina — the WWII battleship that earned 15 battle stars — is moored across the river as a state war memorial, and the Port of Wilmington has moved military cargo since the Second World War. The Wilmington VA Health Care Center on Shipyard Boulevard, the Wilmington Vet Center, and county Veterans Services offices across New Hanover, Brunswick, and Pender counties serve a Veteran population swelled by retirees from Camp Lejeune and Fort Bragg who settled on the coast. American Legion and VFW posts run from downtown Wilmington out to Oak Island, Southport, and Carolina Beach.
