Westcliffe sits in the Wet Mountain Valley under the Sangre de Cristo range, and is the seat of Custer County. It is a small town a long way from a VA medical centre — Pueblo is the nearest clinic, about seventy miles east — so the Custer County Veterans Service Office and visiting outreach programmes do much of the work locally.
Events here tend to be small and worth the drive: wellness and arts programming for rural Veterans, county service-officer hours, and outreach visits from organisations based on the Front Range.
