Salisbury is the seat of Rowan County and one of the oldest centers of Veteran care in North Carolina. The W.G. (Bill) Hefner VA Medical Center opened here in 1953 and now anchors a health care system serving Veterans across a 21-county stretch of the central Piedmont. The Salisbury National Cemetery and its annex on Statesville Boulevard, the North Carolina State Veterans Home on the medical center campus, and the Rowan County Veteran's Council keep the city's Veteran community tightly connected year round.
