Fort Pierce is the county seat of St. Lucie County on Florida's Treasure Coast, and the beach above it is where the Navy trained its first frogmen. The U.S. Naval Amphibious Training Base stood here from 1943 to 1946, training Scouts and Raiders, Naval Combat Demolition Units, and the Underwater Demolition Teams that became today's SEALs; the National Navy UDT-SEAL Museum has preserved that history on the original training ground since Veterans Day 1985. St. Lucie County Veteran Services files benefit claims and runs no-cost transportation to the West Palm Beach VA Medical Center, the Fort Pierce VA Clinic provides primary care, mental health, and select specialty care locally, and the Ardie R. Copas State Veterans' Nursing Home in neighboring Port St. Lucie, named for a St. Lucie County Medal of Honor recipient, offers 120 skilled-nursing beds.
