Durham anchors Veteran health care for central North Carolina. The Durham VA Medical Center on Fulton Street is the parent facility of the Durham VA Health Care System, which runs care at a dozen sites across the state, including the clinics in Raleigh, Garner, Clayton, and Durham itself. Its research and teaching partnership with Duke University puts Veterans in reach of specialty care that smaller systems refer out. Durham County Veteran Services handles claims and benefits locally, and American Legion and VFW posts, along with the Veteran programs at Duke and North Carolina Central University, round out a Research Triangle Veteran community that keeps growing.
