The Dominican Republic is home to a growing community of U.S. Veterans, military retirees, and military families who have settled on the island or visit it often — concentrated around Punta Cana and Bavaro on the east coast, Santo Domingo, and the Sosua and Puerto Plata stretch of the north coast. Veterans living abroad keep their VA benefits: VA disability compensation and pension payments follow you overseas, and the VA Foreign Medical Program covers care for service-connected conditions outside the United States. The U.S. Embassy in Santo Domingo handles federal benefits questions for Americans in-country, and Veteran-led groups on the island run their own gatherings, Veterans Day events, and peer networks.
