Canajoharie sits on the south bank of the Mohawk River in Montgomery County, a village of a few thousand people where support for the military community runs through neighbors, posts, and a county office rather than a large installation. The Montgomery County Veterans' Service Agency in Fonda handles compensation and pension claims, burial benefits and grave markers, and runs transportation to the Samuel S. Stratton VA Medical Center in Albany and to the Fonda VA Clinic on State Highway 30A. VFW Post 562 in nearby Fultonville anchors the county's post activity, and village institutions such as the Van Alstyne Homestead and the Arkell Museum host the commemorations that bring people together.
