Birmingham is Alabama's largest city and the centre of gravity for the state's Veteran community. The Birmingham VA Health Care System runs the Medical Center on 19th Street South along with community based outpatient clinics across central Alabama, and the Birmingham Vet Center serves combat Veterans and their families. Jefferson County's Veterans Service Office files claims at no charge, and American Legion and VFW posts across the metro, together with the 21st District of The American Legion, keep a full calendar of fundraisers, remembrance ceremonies, and suicide prevention events.
