Altus sits in Jackson County in southwestern Oklahoma, a few miles west of Altus Air Force Base and the 97th Air Mobility Wing, which trains mobility aircrews on the C-17 Globemaster III, the KC-46 Pegasus, and the KC-135 Stratotanker for Air Education and Training Command. The Altus VA Clinic on North Main provides primary care and virtual mental health appointments through the Oklahoma City VA Health Care System, and the Oklahoma Department of Veterans Affairs handles state benefits and claims. Aircrew and maintainers rotating through training, retirees who stayed in the area, and Military Families across southwestern Oklahoma all draw on the same close-knit set of local organizations.
