Altoona grew up as a railroad city beneath the Allegheny Front, and the James E. Van Zandt VA Medical Center on Pleasant Valley Boulevard is the Veteran health care center for a wide stretch of central Pennsylvania. Blair County Veteran services and a strong VFW and American Legion presence round out the local network.
