The city is home to Fort Wainwright — supporting the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team of the 11th Airborne Division ("Arctic Wolves") — with Eielson Air Force Base just southeast (354th Fighter Wing). Service Members and Veterans across the Interior are served by the Fairbanks VA CBOC (Alaska VA Healthcare System), the Fairbanks Vet Center, the Alaska National Guard, and the Alaska Office of Veterans Affairs. Active VFW and American Legion posts serve Veterans across the Fairbanks North Star Borough, with Pioneer Park's Alaska Aviation Heritage and the future Alaska Veterans Cemetery in Salcha honoring those who served.
